I moved to a new home or area

Does moving qualify me for a Special Enrollment Period?

A permanent move that changes the health plans available to you is a qualifying life event, so you have 60 days from the move date to enroll, and you can apply up to 60 days before you move to avoid a gap. In most cases you must have had qualifying coverage for at least one of the 60 days before the move, with limited exceptions such as moving to the U.S. from another country or leaving a shelter or transitional housing. A move for vacation or medical treatment does not count. Because marketplace plans and provider networks are county-specific, you usually need a new plan even when you stay with the same carrier, and your new area may price coverage differently. Moving into a home is also the most common moment people add term life insurance sized to the mortgage, so the loan does not become someone else's problem.
