Introducing Scudo Benefits Group
August 7, 2026

Why I built an independent insurance agency for DC, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Florida, how the process works, what it costs you (nothing), and what to expect on a first call.
Most people in DC, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Florida are leaving money or protection on the table. Not because they cannot afford coverage, but because nobody has ever walked them through their actual options in plain language.
That is the gap I built Scudo Benefits Group to close. I am Austin Wilson, founder and licensed independent agent, and this first post explains what the agency does, who it is for, how the process works, and what it costs you.
What does an independent insurance agent actually do?
An independent agent is not tied to one insurance company. I am contracted with many carriers, which means I can compare plans across companies and recommend the one that fits your household, your doctors and your budget rather than the one a single company wants to sell.
In practice, a typical engagement looks like this:
- A short conversation. Who needs coverage, which doctors and prescriptions matter, what you can comfortably spend each month, and what you are trying to protect.
- A side-by-side comparison. Real plans, real premiums, real deductibles, and where the trade-offs are.
- Subsidy and eligibility checks. Whether you qualify for advance premium tax credits on a Marketplace plan, whether a Special Enrollment Period applies, or whether an employer arrangement makes more sense.
- Enrollment help. I stay on the application with you so nothing gets fumbled at the last screen.
- Follow-up. Coverage is not a one-time transaction. Income changes, jobs change, families grow, and plans get discontinued.
Who Scudo Benefits Group serves
- Individuals and families who buy their own health insurance because they are self-employed, between jobs, or working somewhere that does not offer a plan.
- People hitting a life event such as turning 26, getting married, having a baby, moving, losing employer coverage, divorcing, retiring or turning 65.
- Small business owners who want to offer benefits without the cost and administration of a traditional group plan, often through an ICHRA.
- Households building long-term protection with term or permanent life insurance, including indexed universal life when it genuinely fits the plan.
I am licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Florida, and I work with clients across Northern Virginia including Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Vienna, Reston, Loudoun County and Prince William County.
Why work with an independent agent instead of enrolling alone?
You can absolutely enroll yourself on healthcare.gov, and some people should. Where an agent earns their keep is in the details that cost real money:
- Network checks. A cheaper premium is not cheaper if your specialist is out of network.
- Prescription formularies. The same drug can be tier 1 on one plan and tier 4 on another.
- Metal level math. Silver plans can carry cost-sharing reductions that make them cheaper in total than a bronze plan for a lower-income household, even with a higher premium.
- Subsidy accuracy. Estimating income too high or too low creates a tax surprise later.
- Life insurance underwriting. Health history determines which carrier will treat you most favorably, and carriers differ enormously here.
Does it cost anything to work with you?
No. There is no fee for my help. Licensed agents are compensated by the insurance company when a policy is issued, and the premium you pay is the same whether you enroll with my help or on your own. You are never obligated to buy anything, and you can walk away at any point.
What happens on a first call?
Expect 15 to 25 minutes. I ask about your household, your current coverage, your doctors and prescriptions, your budget and any recent life changes. If you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, I will tell you the exact date your window closes. If waiting for Open Enrollment is the smarter move, I will tell you that too, even though it means no sale today.
You will not get a hard close, and I do not sell your information.
How fast can coverage start?
For Marketplace health plans, coverage generally begins the first of the month after enrollment, and Special Enrollment Period rules can affect that. Some plans, especially certain short-term or supplemental products, can start sooner. Life insurance depends on underwriting, and simplified-issue policies can sometimes be approved in days rather than weeks.
What if I already have a plan I like?
Then keep it. The most common recommendation I make is a small change rather than a full switch: adjusting your reported income so your subsidy is accurate, adding a dental or accident plan, or fixing a life insurance beneficiary that has been out of date since a divorce.
What is coming on this blog
This is where I put the answers I give on the phone every week:
- Special Enrollment Period triggers and how the 60-day clock actually works
- What to do when you turn 26 and roll off a parent plan
- Health insurance deadlines after getting married
- ICHRA for small businesses, including what it costs and what to watch for
- How private coverage and permanent life insurance fit into a 30-year plan
